Shakespeare described love as, “Brief as the lightning in the collied night.” Hmm, I was a skeptic. Love was more like a massive building project requiring plans, pieces, and daily physical labor.

This week’s Flashback Track Friday is inspired by the most romantic song I’ve ever heard, “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” This song was penned very quickly by Ewan MacColl for his mistress, folk-singer Peggy Seeger, while they talked over the phone. Lightning definitely struck him that day.

But it wasn’t until 1969 when North-Carolina-born singer Roberta Flack spent a mere 10 hours recording First Take, one of the most sensual and moving albums of all time, that the song became legend. Another act of lightning striking in the slowed-down rendition of this song.

Happy Flashback Track Friday, Friends! Check out my response, “True North.

The original 1957 version. I like this version as well.

  2. Love this track, but I can narrow “favourites” down to maybe 40-50 tracks. Not heard Seeger’s before but prefer Flack’s. But of course it is more produced.

    1. This one sends me….I’m a big fan of Flack’s, but it’s nice to hear Seeger sing what someone wrote for her. Happy Friday, Mister B.

      1. Do you do Spotify? I created it when I got my speaker and Spotify, hence the silly name. Wanted it to be unique!

    1. In the Spotify app, go to the playlist. In the title bit, there is a circle with “…” inside it. That pulls down a menu. Hit Share > Copy Playlist Link. I just pasted the link into WP, and it did everything else.
