Happy Mother’s Day to all of my readers who are mothers, in any of the many capacities of the word. To me, motherhood is the greatest adventure, and no matter where I roam, I am on an endless quest to be the best mother I can be for my two littles. Thanks for reading about my experiences along the way.

My Tandem Partner

After story time,
before dream time,
I curl beside my son,
fasten my arm around his chest,
safety for his nightly glide.

Then, my son will say,

“Don’t let go,”
as if to fall asleep
is to fly,
and I’m his tandem partner,
the one tasked
with deploying his parachute.

“Stay with me
this many times.”
He holds up fingers
that can’t fully flex,
and even after hauling
the backpack of my day,
I am happiest to hug him
long past freefall.

His last request,
“Tuck me in, Mommy,”
and I frame him
in billowy, blue canopy.
Whisper, “I’m happy
to be your mommy,”
with back to the wind,
my joy bridling him
into the unscathed sky.
Before pulling the pilot chute
on our joyous flight.

    1. 💜Thank you for reading these tidbits. I am savoring these mommy moments. And I love how through poetry, I can collect them throughout time, a bit like a scrapbook.

      1. A bit like a scrapbook, yes I love that!Art is the best way to collect these moments. Photos only contain one kind of information. But poetry can hold so much more.

      2. Very true. It’s fun to flip back and there’s always another page to decorate. Here’s to more scrapbooking with letters and words. 💜

  4. Aah, this brings back memories of lying by my children in bed, waiting for them to fall asleep. Happy days. The image of the parachute is perfect.

    1. Thank you. I do love this moment. Yep, I am about to do that bit right after this comment. I usually do my gratitude/thankfulness thinking at that time, and so it feels good to to be still.. That is…until my littlest one starts in on his philosophical questioning. Let’s hope tonight it’s smooth sailing.
