Frances Macdonald MacNair, 1911

Kiai! Spring is a Black Belt
startling the woods awake.
The hinge of earth’s axis
bends in salutation to Master Sun.
Spring shakes ground, splits boards,
startles hibernating snakes from their dens
with moves that express confidence.
A flower garden grown in self-defense.
Pitter-patter footwork, rainfall in perfect time,
Spring is the victor in gallant lime.

    1. Thank you, Cindy. It was written with a 10 line maximum, but that seemed to bring out the best in this one, I think. 💜 I appreciate you reading and commenting on my work.

  5. Really love this. My favorite line is “A flower garden grown in self-defense.” I love the idea of Spring coming with a black belt to kick winter to the curb. We are ready!
