Today’s songwriter, Cat Stevens aka Yusuf Islam, grew up with a baby grand piano in the living room that no one but his mother could play. He admits that it was only after he learned some basic chords on a guitar that he began to compose music on the piano. In 1967, Yusuf wrote today’s flashback, “The First Cut is the Deepest,” a track that would go on to be cut by many great artists including Sheryl Crow and Rod Steward. But no version has quite the power of the first cut of the track recorded in 1967 by Patricia Ann Cole aka P.P. Arnold, an American soul singer that gained huge fame from her version of the song.
