“Better?” I shift the shield over Brenda’s eyes. Adjust her metal cave. Clank on the side a few times for good measure.
But no laughter returns.
For the record, this is her idea, not mine.
After the pandemic, I was done with surprises, but I guess I am learning love is full of these sorts of compromises.
Soon we’d be transported thousands of feet below the surface to become the first couple in history to get married on the bottom of the sea.
Would her white veiled helmet hold? She finally speaks as I screw the last bolt in extra tight, for how can I be sure…
“I shall see you again.”
The world on the first of May looks grey, greyer than expected. I close my eyes, and tell Brenda I love her one last time before we take the plunge.
