“Mount Everest” Digital Artwork by Anand Swaroop Manchiraju

Last night, I climbed
over your body
searching for my Everest
but unwilling to reach its summit.
And as my crampons gripped
your rocky surface,
feeling left my limbs.

Was this really love
or lack of oxygen?

If love, then when to begin
down the pathway
of your kiss?

I shivered with insecurity,
gripped exposed terrain
tucked my head in a crevasse,
a climber harnessed till the end.

Afraid to let go.
Afraid of the fall.
Afraid of being smothered.
Afraid of getting lost.

Destined to let another
failed expedition
with bare-boned cost
turn a star-eyed dreamer
into a shooting comet,
burnt out bits of dust
romanticized as luck.

    1. Thank you, Tom. 💜 I’ll admit I was forced to read my students’ articles on Mt. Everest recently and there facts and pseudo facts inspired this crossover idea.

  6. Sure, love is one of the most powerful and hardest journeys, yet an adventure nonetheless. Your words pull in your reader, and takes one back to the place and time of when this has been written. The emotion is pulsating.. vibrating..
    That’s what I call a great read 😊

    1. Thank you. I’m beaming from your kind words. The epic adventure of love, I know I’ve chickened out a few times, and also gotten caught up in the landslides. Many thanks for reading and connecting with this poem, Simone. 💜🦋
