I was inspired by Lord Huron’s latest album, Long Lost. Specifically, the amazing storytelling. After a long day of teaching and extra help and extra meetings, it was easy to fall into the song’s rhythm and craft this narrative poem as an echo. I do hope you enjoy it.

Anna Raczka

I said I’d go to the firing squad
before I left your side,
but when the war between us started,
I realized I’d lied.

I said I’d change to please you,
put a part of me aside,
But I could never sacrifice myself.
The truth is that I lied.

I promised to meet you
in that flowery dress you liked,
but I’d already donated it.
The whole idea was a lie.

Once you signed the papers,
I didn’t care if you lived or died.
And if I ever told you otherwise,
I lied.

I tucked my children in
said there’s no way he can get inside
and with goodnight kisses,
I continued to lie.

    1. Thank you kindly, Grace. I wrote this like the song in a confessional style, and I see now how powerful that can really be.

    1. Thank you. It’s easy to sway to this song and I wanted my words to have that soft feel as well. I did find it frightening this speakers story and how it would feel to l love with fear for your family’s safety.

  11. Wow, K! I can understand being inspired by this song. The tale you weave is so sad but one that is heard over and over. Tough subject matter, but written expertly.
