“Sunset in the Winter, A Coast of the Sea”, Arkhip Kuindzhi, 1890, oil on cardboard.

Sunset takes it starting place

on a white spring board cloud.

I watch it’s approach:

a hop, a skip, a light touch

over the hurdle,

smooth but forceful,

night’s takeoff.

The proper angle of darkness

will descend, but not until

amber arches extend

colors in full control –

a twister reaches its proper elevation

outperforming the scattered particles

with rhythmic technique,

falling gracefully

tucked with precise execution.

I watch for ripples in the blue sky,

but there are none.

Seven tens every time.

The day is done.

  1. An amazing poem and painting. This reminds me of Golden Hour in photography. ❤️

    1. Yes, that’s it exactly. I found the painting afterwards, and the golden hour, I was lucky to catch on my walk.

    1. Thank you, Judy. My neighbor asked me for a walk. And I was able to see today’s plunge. I hadn’t been sure of what to write, so a lucky find.

    1. Thank you, Kohn. Lots of king white clouds stretched overhead on my walk. I was grateful that they spring-boarded this idea.
