This fun-filled fantasy started as a flash, of sorts, but the plot kept demanding to be told in verse, so finally, I relented. Enjoy!

The trumpet sounds a fanfare
as Fenwick makes the rounds,
delivering the snail mail
to the garden grounds.

Summer is the season
of festivals and fine galas.
O’er clotted field and bramble,
the beloved gnome travels

delivering invitations
well-wishes, and announcements
up the shire’s steepest knoll,
past innocent ox-eyes
sunbathing below
the mighty yoke.

But his most important letter
must arrive post-haste,
so faithful Fenwick signals
to the butterfly brigade

which in-turn act as sails
to ferry Fenwick and his slippery steed
up the hillside with a fluttering gale,
for he must reach the peak by sunset,
and this is the only trail.

And when he finds the Queen
amongst her grand design,
he prays his precious letter
will reach her apiary in time.
For within this sacred envelope
are the most recent details
for how her hive
might well survive
another summer stockpile.

Fenwick never falters,
but with tacit urgency
and the spirit of survival
in nature does he trust.

He must make it to the colony
in time to save all of us.
