Lucas Cranach the Elder (German, 1472–1553)
What is weakness if not words? Whispered in a lover's lap, the spurs and traps of afternoon naps. What is weakness if not she? Lips of amaryllis, a forbidden kiss, the stolen bliss. What is weakness but being told we can have none of this? The foreign fruit whose juice the lips have never tasted. Faith is a delicate defense against blinding anguish. A strength easily sheered. When we choose to languish, all is wasted.
