Flat tummy bay,
jab of jetty,
soft swell of waves.

The islanders say
women are water ––
they give before they take.

Reduce gusty gale
with inward curves
that make sailing deeper waters safe.

Float freely
salt water buoys,
full of hope in pouring rain.

  1. Beautifully done! I love the use of alliteration in this quadrille, the ‘jab of jetty’, ‘gusty gale’ and ‘women are water’ (yes, we are!), but the image that stays with me is the ‘salt water buoys, / full of hope in pouring rain.’ I’ve always thought of buoys as being lonely, floating out there in the water.

    1. Thank you, Kim. I think of the buoys as life savers or a security blanket. My son says in his buoy when we go to the ocean, so I think that’s where they came from.

  2. I love what you’ve done with this and the water analogy, water also seeks to find equilibrium and stillness…

    1. Thanks, Simon. Maybe that’s why I love it so. Everything’s better when wading. 😀

      1. Wading is a refreshing thing to do… Are you someone that wades in up to their ankles knees or all the way?

If this poem isn’t genius, I don’t know what is, KK.

    1. Thank you, Colleen. 💜 I’ve been lucky enough to spend the last few days by, in and surrounded by water, and I keep thinking how soothing it is and so like a mother.

  8. Beautiful poem, K, and after listening/watching the video it feels like the poem is an ekphrastic of the song. Really enjoyed them both.

    1. Thank you so much, Lisa. 💜 I actually painstakingly selected the song after quite quickly penning the quadrille when everyone in my family had gone to bed. I am glad to hear they echo each other well. It’s a beautiful song, and I had forgotten the voyage in it.

I am glad that I get to read one of your “word trapeze artist” compositions. This was a fun read; differing parts should bring thoughts related to that reader. It is full of temptations.
