Lately, I’ve had my own struggles to stay healthy, and so I’ve decided to share this image found on AllPoetry.com. The prompt: Would would Silvia Plath say? If you feel inspired, join me in penning 50 words or less to this solitary scene.

In Sickness & In Health

In sickness,
I am four walls–
naked limbs
blend to woodsy wallpaper,
bed shifts to abandoned field,
mouth to straw.

And should I make it through
my bout of plague or flu,
the reverie will dissolve.

Hair spun gold by stealth.

My firstborn promises,
prays quickly forgotten
in good health.

  1. A really good ekphrastic poem for a really interesting prompt. You’ve done it justice. Sounds like what Sylvia Plath would say, and the imagery used is just perfect. Here’s hoping you feel better soon 🙂

  2. […] is my poem in answer to K.F. Hartless’s prompt to write 50 words or less in response to this image. Sorry, K.F.  but I cheated and went 11 words […]

  3. the ending made me smile; once we’re back to good health we tend to forget our previous resolutions 🙂

    1. Yes, well, I know I always do. It extends to my children as well. If they’re sick, all sorts of promises to self can be made if I am just able to nurse them to health.

    1. I might of heard her wrong. She was so often under the bell jar.

      1. I wouldn’t worry too much about it – she would probably say that 😉

  5. Sorry to read you’re struggling to stay healthy. Some solid writing was born from the situation, although all that you share is engaging. Take care, K.🌼

  6. Thank you, Michele. We’ve been tossing around a few things here this fall. I think it’s also the bodies way of saying slow down, you’re over doing it. I appreciate the well wishes, friend. I’m still learning why I need to rest.

  8. Thank you so much. I am feeling much more myself after a little bit more rest. Yeah, somehow I missed Nick Mulvey when he came on the scene. It may have been during those cloudy new mom years.
