Can’t see morning to can’t see night,

a tiny garden of truth

sprouts roots,

cultivating new narratives of

American truth.

Beneath the sod, the bones of their forefathers

are restless,

their stories never loosed.

But on the streets of the capital city,

the long bus ride towards equality

has a new route.

For those that first appeared in 1619,

ready to die for revolution

unacknowledged in the declaration,

patriots that were marginalized

and reduced.

May we water the world with their words

and enjoy the rich and colorful blooms.

If you haven’t had a chance to read the 1619 Project that first appeared in the New York Time’s Magazine, you should add it to your must-read list. I’m looking forward to reading the expanded stories in The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story. A fuller history well overdue.

  1. Thank you, Colleen. I liked the fire in the belly flame of justice that started this one.
