When he storms,

my son is a hurricane,

category four.

The power outages last for days,

his cyclone of heavy rains

destroy my well-built

time frames,

uproot our family tree.

His fits cause failure of the curtainwall

between boy and beast,

a near complete destruction

of all inner peace.

When nerves snap,

and he’s isolated (and ill at ease),

losses are expected and may extend for weeks.

  1. Wow ! this is one powerful piece of metaphoric writing; it has, like your son, a commanding presence !!!

    1. Thanks, John. Yes, and he’s so shy normally. I think he’s a bottler, but tIme will tell…

Let’s hope nobody in your household reaches for the psych feel-good pills … that Ritalin is the soul death. In fact, Ritalin turns a child’s world upside-down. The natural highs are gone, and in their place is … what? Emptiness, and sheer black longing.

    1. Thanks so much, Greg. Will do. We’re sort of an all-natural as possible crew. No worries on that front. I’ll take the hurricane any day.

  4. Thank you so much, Beth. We sure can weather a lot as teachers and parents. I’m grateful for the quiet moments and the precious times of stillness so that I can refresh my spirit for what might be another hurricane season.
