Crickets and soccer kicks,
sunlight takes the highlights
tells the rest of us
forget it.

Oh, to be the castle of trees
behind the goalie, a fortress
with no need of defense.

I’d wave no flags of allegiance,
keep my drawbridge closed,
guards on post, cautious but
ambivalent.

For the weary and the sick,
the world is a caboose––
stand in line,
be measured (and prodded)
to later be set loose.

Some days, I know it’s true,
I’m deserving of
each red-flag fluke,
and when it’s full blown,
I’d gladly put my own
in the hangman’s humane noose.

These thoughts, weird and urgent,
are commonplace to a neurodivergent.
