Look into the limbal rings of leaves,
green summer eyes.
This was once paradise.

Streams that did not run rank,
reeds of fields ideal for fishing,
all found outside
the sphere of sun and moon
where rivers of red wine
and fiddler’s green
led women to dance
and their ponds of purified honey
made men swoon.

For in the garden,
behind the walled enclosure,
fruits of every kind
grew firm year round.

But as two small apple hands
clasp mine,
cold as Blue Ridge Mountains peaks,
bathed in a spiritual breeze,
we three experience
the kingdom of glory
in this lifetime.

  1. Thank goodness you can. I feel the same way about the time spent with my 3 year-old granddaughter. I wonder what kind of world she’ll face in her adult years. “small apple hands” is so precious, Katie.

    1. Thank you so much, Lisa. I’m loving these after dinner walks holding hands. We make our own little paradise in these moments. I can take on their innocent view of things if only for the rest of the neighborhood pathway. 💜

  2. I had to look up ‘limbal rings’ ; and hey! I learnt something new. I enjoyed the Edenic flourish of this —- and Katie, I passed a peephole today and I thought of your great poem on the topic but how can I find it?

    1. Yes, I do love all things eyes. This idea of paradise sort of swirled its way around inside my mind to form a universal sort of place. Ah, yes. The peephole poem. Here it is: https://kfhartless.com/2021/05/18/poetry-peephole/. Thanks as always, friend.
