A rack of Gotgam, Korean-style dried persimmons

The dragon waits—
scales, fails, and swallowed hate.

The persimmon is ripe,
but not yet ready to taste—
roasted red pepper, cinnamon, and dates.

A hostile state.
Can we control the appetite for anger
when it growls awake?

Reimagine our own fates,
cover the sweet tang in tinfoil,
place it in sufficient light, and wait?

Intervene for the earths's sake
to improve air circulation,
sanitation and diet?

Or are we too stubborn,
to afraid of our own blight—
flesh to shrivel,
frosty layer to form,
our bodies transformed
to hardened, chewy states,

to recreate ourselves?

Dried Gotgam,
scarier than dragons
or tigers,
our roars made quiet;
our goodness innate.

  1. I have yet to try this Korean delicacy; fascinating! In awe of the whole motif. Especially for, “it has also been on my mind,” to quote Lady Galadriel. The Hidden Dragon, (in the year of). Your poem, the 2024 artwork by Ruth Speer sync perfectly🐲🧱🫑

  2. I’m so pleased you enjoyed this one, EF. There was the image, and then something simple, but what happened was much more complex. That process of aging and changing. I’m starting to see how beautiful it can be when we let it happen. I like myself a lot more now than I did twenty years ago.🍊🐅🐲

Another powerful piece from you. 🙂 Great descriptions on how we’re constantly growing, shedding old scales while still nursing that inner fire 🔥
