He will, if he can,
or if he wills it not, he can't:

the elephant.

He may engage
in the playful behaviors of a pet:
eyes open and expressive,
mirrored sway of stance,
daub of pink dots on grey flesh,
but the wear and tear of his ears
mark him a vet.

When told, his nose strikes pose,
but his mouth's a bull dozer;
he's a creature in constant digest.

With waves of white gold skin
which crest like tiny shark fins,
he is timeless and majestic.

We find ourselves at sea
in his presence:

the elephant.
