The shoe tie days behind us,
you cast your string to sea.
Parenting:
catch and release.

Just you without me.

How do I surface
from the depths of care giving?
Break the glassy surface
to breathe independently?

Just you without me.

I let go of your hand.
Abandon the red wagon
to join the stands,
your #1 fan, remotely.

Just you without me.

I've spent years watering
a sapling, but you bloom
independently,
as it should be.

Just you without me.

Still, I can't help but worry.

Just you.
Just you without.
Just you without me.

  3. Beautiful poem! I’m not at the shoe-tying stage yet, but enjoying the brief moments where it’s just me and them.

    1. Yes. We mothers go through all the phases, don’t we? I just want to hold on to every bedtime cuddle and remember it. 💜
