Youth,
elasticity of emotions,
easy bounce of bodies,
wallow in yourself,
a green soaking spring,
frolic in the fresh field
of each other’s faces.
Wash your thick bloom of hair
in life’s bubbly stream.
Enjoy your prime,
this free and fragile dream
of vitality’s hardy vine.
Suck up the springtide,
best season of your lifetime.
Cheers to youth,
a potent, immature drink;
bottoms up,
it’s later than you think.

For NaPoWriMo Day 7, I chose to write about one of the things “We Can’t Pay For,” a contest hosted by FrenchGirl on AllPoetry. My mind went straight to the freedom of youth, so I penned a free-verse poem under 20 lines for this contest.

The NaPoWriMo.net prompt for today is to write a poem in a special form. I chose the “Fib” which is a six-line form with the syllable count following the Fibonacci sequence of 1/1/2/3/5/8. You can link multiple Fibs together into a multi-stanza poem, or even start going backwards after your first six lines, with syllable counts of 8/5/3/2/1/1. Here is my best go at transforming this poem into a Fib. Which do you prefer? Join us in verse!

Juvenescence

Youth,
bounce,
easy
emotions,
elasticity.
Bodies feel firm as evergreen.

Youth,
lean,
frolic
in fresh fields
of other’s faces,
clean bubbles burst by soaking spring.

Youth,
bloom,
fragile
petals prime,
free vitality.
The hardy vine creeps by unseen.

Youth,
dream,
potent,
immature
cheeky, cheery drink.
Bottoms up! Faster than you think.

  1. Great advice! I wasted most of my youth in a mire of mangled emotions!

    1. Thanks, Ingrid. Yes, I can also say there was much-wasted youth here as well–coupled oddly and too early. But still, I admire the “free” vitality of those days. Cheers to all those who can fully enjoy the “spring time” of their lives.

  2. Sorry, I got stuck on elastic and then my mind kinda wandered.

    1. Youth is very elastic. It’s so easy to bounce back and the skin has much elasticity, no? Still caught? 😉

  3. A lovely poem. What do they say about youth being wasted on the young!

    1. Pure potential straight in the bin. Can’t get it back with the time trash collector swings by. It is ironic. Thanks, Hobbo. 🙂

    1. Thank you, John. Miss the easy bounce back of youth. How easy it is to take that last swig and recover again the next morning.

      2. Just need to make Youth pills–something to give you an eight hour bounce back (may be a story here). 😉
