The Fairies Banquet, 1859
John Anster Fitzgerald (1823-1906)

My banners hung. Fruit crown in hair. The brassy fanfare of leaves introduces honored guests to my most regal seasonal affair. Salmon run sunsets and a calligraphy of flower stems invites us to reflect, as sunlight dims to dining tables, candlelit. Come chinwaggers, sit. Enjoy the harvest of lushness. The rustling tide of leaves make way for the harmonic sounds of the first freeze. Strut in with black tie and fitted velvet dress to join the yearly rut.

Reap tender gladness;

to fall from such a great height,

a backend banquet.

    1. Thank you, Jane. I hope the same, but the silver bells are starting to dot the lawn, and so I am grateful for this long fall and ready to toast this season.

      1. Our autumn has turned to rain. It’s needed so I won’t complain. No frosts yet though.

      2. Today, was almost prison-like here. I hope like Frederick the field mouse I’ve absorbed enough colors to make it through.

      3. We had five months without a drop of rain. All we did was worry about how parched everything was. We’ve had two and a half days of rain now and we’re tearing our hair. And we laugh at the attention span of goldfish!

      4. There’s nothing to get me down more than an all-day downpour. But, I keep my shelves well-stocked for this occasions. Books infinitely better than umbrellas to help me get where I want to go.

      5. I don’t mind the actual downpour as long as I’m warm, but I do hate having dogs bouncing about needing to let off steam but refusing to set paw outside because it’s wet.

    1. Thank you, Tom. I found that afterwards, on a whim. But I think it provides even more to write about. I’m so glad you enjoyed my fanfare. The season ends here, almost overnight.

    1. Thank you , Björn. I love how the autumn lingers in Virginia. A playful time of year, but it is ending here as well. Today, the colors were washed out.
