Blushing pink, a sunset in each cheek,

the sight of which makes the wonky woods go weak.

The moon swoons; the stars give a flirtatious wink.

The ruby in the sky may finally be within reach,

but when I extend myself,

the night’s black snake coils its scales to suffocate

the beams; the lovely light abates,

and I am left to watch in horror

as night’s bright egg

incubates.

  1. Horror poetry? Reads as if the protagonist is experiencing a nightmare that’s all too real. Enjoyed it a lot.

    1. Thank you, Michele. My parents used to have a den of black snacks camped out front. They always managed to surprise us with there presence, but they’re not prone to biting. I appreciate your support so very much. 💜

  4. Those last 3 lines gave me the goosebumps. A sinister twist that reminds of a Murakami novel.

  5. Thank you, Lisa. I looked up Murakami. I will have to add one of his novels to my summer reading list. Do you have a favorite you’d recommend?
